The Waterloo Library & Historical Society will present “Half-Mile Thunder: The Story of Fairground Racing at Maple Grove Speedway in Waterloo, New York,” on Monday, September 21, at 6:30 p.m. in Fatzinger Hall.

The program features several distinguished speakers. Dr. Alison Kreitzer, Director of Collections at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing, will discuss the rise of fairground racing in America and how Waterloo’s speedway fit into the larger story of grassroots motorsports. Motorsports historian Ken Parrotte will examine Maple Grove Speedway’s history, highlighting its track, race cars, drivers, and the events that ultimately led to its closure.

The evening concludes with “Reminiscences of Maple Grove,” a panel discussion led by Kip Zeiter, Public Outreach Coordinator for the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen. Joining him will be Waterloo resident John Velte, whose father, Rollie Velte, raced at Maple Grove, and local dirt-track racing expert Chuck Brownell. Audience members are encouraged to share their own memories and stories.
