SUMMARY:The Green Grand Prix
DESCRIPTION:The Green Grand Prix is an educational and competitive event in Watkins Glen\, NY including the only Official SCCA road rally that promotes entry of all road- legal vehicle types and fuels in North America.  Our Road Rally is sponsored by THE DORIS BOVEE MEMORIAL FOUNDATION. Doris Bovee was an environmental enthusiast and our road rally is a tribute to her. \n \n\nWATKINS GLEN\, NY – The Toyota Green Grand Prix\, a showcase of motoring technology that aims for a cleaner environment\, is returning to the famed Watkins Glen International race course on Friday April 12th\, 2024. \nThe single-day event will feature a fuel-efficiency competition for pre-registered drivers of alternate-fueled vehicles\, hybrids and traditional gasoline-powered and diesel-powered vehicles. Individuals\, colleges and universities\, car clubs and manufacturers are all invited to participate. \nEntries in the rallies are now being accepted through the Toyota Green Grand Prix website at www.greengrandprix.com. \nThe diversity of the day’s activities emphasizes the breadth of the goals of the Green Grand Prix. “The mission of the Toyota Green Grand Prix is educational\, to promote innovation in sustainable transportation technologies\,” said Bob Gillespie\, chairman of the Green Grand Prix Corp.\, a non-profit organization. “We are proud that our event\, in its seventeenth year\, attracts students from universities\, colleges and high schools. We want the Green Grand Prix to be a means of encouraging technology students to stay in the Northeast to help move our region to become a center for clean energy.” \nThe Toyota Green Grand Prix’s rallies are sanctioned by the SCCA will offer up the challenges and excitement of driving on the race track and driving on open roads. \nThe first event of the day will be the Doris Bovee Memorial Road Rally. This is a Time-Speed-Distance event held on scenic public roads of the Finger Lakes Region. Drivers and navigators will be scored on their ability to follow a challenging course at precise legal speeds. A 100-mile\, fuel economy event on the 3.5 mile WGI full course will follow in the afternoon. This is essentially the same configuration as the original 1957 track. The rallies are open to nearly all classes of road vehicles. The afternoon fuel economy event will include the Prius Challenge\, with special categories of competition for all generations of Toyota Prius. A class for Exhibition category vehicles will also be included” Gillespie said. \nMany hybrids\, plug-in hybrids and full electric vehicles are expected. \nThe Doris Bovee Foundation is one of the Green Grand Prix’s key supporters\, and the morning event is named in the honor of Doris Bovee\, who was a well-known area environmentalist and taught for many years in the Corning-Painted Post (NY) school district .She was known for her love of plants and birds. Ms. Bovee was also involved with SCCA road rallies and was part of the Glen Region SCCA at its inception. The rallies are sponsored by the Glen Region Sports Car Club of America and are the only official SCCA road rallies of their kind in the nation. \nOther important supporters of the event are Corning Enterprises of Corning\, NY and the Central New York Clean Cities Coalition based in Rochester\, NY. \nUP-TO-DATE DETAILS AVAILABLE AT https://www.greengrandprix.com

SUMMARY:High Performance Driving School: Watkins Glen Season Opener
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of a driving school is quite simple: to improve your driving skills. We conduct the school on a racetrack under the close supervision of experienced and trained instructors. You will learn how to handle and control your vehicle at speeds not normally attained on public roads. This will help to prepare you for emergencies in normal driving. It will also allow you to explore your capabilities as a driver and those of your vehicle in a controlled environment. At no time will you be encouraged to go any faster than is comfortable. All participants will be organized into run groups in accordance with experience\, skill\, and type of vehicle. \nWhat you learn on the track depends on your driving skill. Beginners are taught driving style (smoothness\, consistency\, the ability to read the track)\, more experienced participants continue to work on consistency\, while developing new skills such as trail braking and threshold braking. \nAs a beginner\, every time you are on the track\, you will have an experienced instructor with you in the passenger seat.\nThough you are on a racetrack with other drivers of similar driving skills\, it is not a race. Passing in corners is not allowed\, and you are not expected to shift at redline\, or go screaming through each corner with the tires squealing. Safety of the event is of the utmost importance. Driver conduct will be diligently monitored throughout the day by the staff\, instructors\, and corner workers. \nTrack Time: You will have four on-track sessions each day varying from 20-30 minutes each. At the end of the event you will have had between 1.5 to 2 hours on-track each day. That’s a lot of driving time and a lot of personalized high-quality instruction.\n\nDo I need to own an Audi?  We welcome all makes of cars  — you don’t have to drive an Audi to enjoy our events.  This school is an excellent way for you to improve your driving skills and have fun too! \nFirst Time Students:  Our club is a friendly community of individuals who share a passion for driving their cars. We know what it’s like to drive on a race-track for the first time and we customize your experience to make it an enjoyable as possible. We love welcoming first-timers to our events and we have a good number of first-timers at each one – you will not be alone.  Your novice classroom teacher and your personal instructor are ready to make you comfortable and give you the tools and confidence to enjoy driving your car on the race-track.

SUMMARY:Center Conversation: "The Greatest Corvette Story Ever Told"
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a very special presentation about the amazing history of Camoradi USA Racing’s 1960 Corvette and the colorful cast of characters surrounding it. The car was built for international competition under the auspices of Chevrolet General Manager Ed Cole and Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Duntov and went on to race successfully in Havana\, Daytona\, Sebring\, Nürburgring\, Sweden\, and Le Mans. The only thing more amazing than this car’s creation and race record is its survival. On the way to Britain’s famed Goodwood circuit in August 1960 it was crashed hard and left for dead but miraculously\, the shattered remains were preserved and discovered some thirty years later by Loren Lundberg\, an unbelievably tenacious Corvette enthusiast from Glendale\, Arizona. Learn how Loren found and rescued the car\, and how he and current caretaker Dominick Testa went to great lengths to restore it and make sure its incredible story would not be forgotten. \nChuck Schroedel: Chuck was part of the Camoradi Corvette’s crew at Le Mans in 1960\nDominick Testa: Dominick is the Camoradi Corvette’s current caretaker\nRichard Prince: Richard is a Corvette historian

SUMMARY:Driving School: Watkins Glen International
DESCRIPTION:For 2024\, this is now a one-day event. One of our two days planned for the event this year had to be cancelled due to a NASCAR event taking precedence as per our contract. Bummer\, right? This event is a big favorite for us and draws the largest crowd every year. We totally understand if you’re feeling a bit let down\, but fear not! We’re on the lookout for fun social activities in the Watkins Glen area\, turning this into a multi-day adventure that’s totally worth the drive. Also\, WGI has sweetened the deal by offering us some extra track time. So\, even though it’s now a one-day affair on the track\, we promise it’ll be a blast and a fantastic learning opportunity for students. We’re working hard to make sure this event is still one for the books!

SUMMARY:Cameron R. Argetsinger Award for Outstanding Contributions to Motorsports
DESCRIPTION:WATKINS GLEN\, N.Y. (May 6\, 2024) – Zak Brown\, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Racing\, will receive the 10th annual IMRRC Cameron R. Argetsinger Award at a gala presented by Sahlen’s\, NASCAR\, Watkins Glen International and IMSA\, on Thursday\, September 12\, 2024. The dinner and presentation will be held prior to the running of the NASCAR Go Bowling at The Glen event\, September 11-15\, at Watkins Glen International. \nThe International Motor Racing Research Center returns to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning\, New York\, to present the award to Brown\, in recognition of his universal contributions to help advance and improve the sport of motor racing. \nEstablished in 2014\, the CRA Award had been presented at gala events at the CMOG through 2019\, honoring such legends of the sport as Chip Ganassi\, Roger Penske\, Mario Andretti\, Richard Petty\, the France Family and Bobby Rahal. When the pandemic hit\, the event moved first to Watkins Glen International\, then to the Harbor Hotel in Watkins Glen\, recognizing Lyn St. James\, Mike Helton and Richard Childress through 2023. \n“We are thrilled to be returning to the Corning Museum of Glass\, where the IMRRC launched the CRA Award galas in 2014\, initially honoring Chip Ganassi\,” said Mark Steigerwald\, Executive Director of the IMRRC. “We expect a significant turnout for this year’s event\, based on the huge growth of popularity of Formula 1 racing in recent years\, and McLaren’s progress in performance since Brown came on board with the team. The CMOG’s facility can easily accommodate a large number of attendees.” \nBobby Rahal\, the 1986 Indy 500 winner and current NTT INDYCAR SERIES team owner\, will introduce Brown at the gala and will interview the honoree on stage. \n \nThe gala is open to the public. Tickets may be purchased at the IMRRC store. All proceeds benefit the IMRRC\, a 501(c)(3 organization. \nThe award memorializes Cameron R. Argetsinger\, often referred to as the father of American road racing. He was a visionary who\, in 1948\, conceived\, organized\, and drove in the first port-war road race in America through the roads of Watkins Glen. He brought Formula 1 to WGI in 1961 and the circuit hosted the United States Grand Prix for 20 years. He was president of the IMRRC for five years\, until his death in 2008. \nAs CEO of McLaren Racing\, Zak Brown has overall responsibility for the business\, including strategic direction\, operational performance\, marketing and commercial development. Since joining the team in 2016\, he has led the transformation of the brand and culture of the McLaren Formula 1 team and put in place the people\, resources\, infrastructure and mindset that has enabled McLaren to return to racing at the front of the F1 grid. Brown has taken McLaren Racing onto a global motorsport stage\, with McLaren teams now racing in IndyCar\, Formula E\, Extreme E\, Esports\, F1 Academy\, with the World Endurance Championship joining the line up in 2024. \nBorn and raised in California\, Brown raced professionally around the world for 10 years before developing his skills in motorsport’s business and commercial worlds. In 1995\, he founded JMI\, which grew to become the largest and most successful motorsport marketing agency in the world. JMI was acquired in 2013 by CSM\, a division of Chime Communications. \nBrown is a racer and renowned for his energy\, his relentless work ethic and his knowledge of the business and history of motorsport. He’s been unafraid to publicly address some of the issues facing the world of motorsport and has been the lead protagonist around the budget cap\, sustainability and diversity in the sport\, as well as champion of fans interests. He has demonstrated the ability to take the tough decisions needed to make an F1 team successful. \nBrown co-founded and co-owns United Autosports\, a leading racing team competing in international sportscar racing\, the Supercars Championship in Australia\, and various historic racing events around the world. Outside of work\, Zak is an avid collector of historical documents\, baseball and ice hockey memorabilia\, and both road and racing cars. He lives in Surrey in the U.K. \nTickets to the gala may be purchased at the IMRRC store. It is recommended to register early. As the event is expected to sell out quickly.
