SUMMARY:IMRRC Award Dinner 2023
DESCRIPTION:Childress’ storied career spans decades. As a child\, he spent time at Bowman Gray Stadium\, Winston-Salem\, North Carolina’s local short track\, selling peanuts and popcorn. Years later\, in the fall of 1969\, his first opportunity to compete in a NASCAR-sanctioned event arose and he established Richard Childress Racing. Childress drove his own car for 285 starts in NASCAR’s premier series before realizing that he needed to focus on team ownership to flourish at that level. \nThe moment that changed everything for Richard Childress Racing was when Dale Earnhardt became the permanent driver of the #3 car in 1984. Success came almost instantly\, with their first win together at Talladega Superspeedway on July 29 of that year. It was the first of 67 wins Earnhardt would record under the Richard Childress Racing banner. The team has expanded exponentially since\, competing in all three NASCAR national series\, with Childress becoming the first team owner to win in all three.

SUMMARY:IMRRC - Celebrating 75 Years of Racing at ‘The Glen’ And 70 Years of “Americas Sports Car” – Corvette
DESCRIPTION:Watkins Glen Vintage Weekend – September 7-10\, 2023 \nThe small village of Watkins Glen is getting ready to host one BIG weekend this September and we invite you to be part of the celebration!  \nThe Racing Story \nOctober 2\, 1948 began a new chapter in the history of motorsports in America as daring men and their machines raced around a 6.6 mile course of village streets and county roads. Seventy-five years and thousands of laps later\, what began on the streets continues today at the famed circuit on the hill and ‘The Glen’ is known to race fans around the world. \n \nThe Corvette and Watkins Glen \nHarley J. Earl\, Global Head of General Motors Design came to the 1951 sports car races to display his radical GM concept car\, the Le Sabre. The car drew much attention\, but Earl was struck by the enthusiasm of the thousands of fans cheering for all the European makes – there were no American cars in the field. He would later recall how his visit to Watkins Glen became the inspiration to design the Corvette – “America’s Sports Car.” We will celebrate the car and honor the man throughout the weekend. Plans are underway to bring the Le Sabre back to Watkins Glen for the first time since that memorable 1951 weekend. \nEvent Schedule \n\nThursday\, September 7 – Lakewood vineyards FLX Corvette Journey\nFriday\, September 8 – 30th Annual Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival www.grandprixfestival.com. This event annually attracts 20\,000+ fans to a day-long celebration of the early days of racing through the village. Corvette is the featured marque for this year’s Festival in celebration of the marque’s 70th birthday. A special display of Corvette race cars will highlight the car’s competition heritage at ‘The Glen’\, and the cars will have the opportunity to run several laps of the original street circuit in front of those 20\,000+ cheering fans.\nSaturday\, September 9 – The IMRRC\, www.racingarchives.org will host an evening ‘Corvette Symposium’ open to all fans of the marque. More details to follow!\nSaturday – Sunday\, September 9-10 – Hilliard U.S. Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International\, one of the largest and most competitive events on the SVRA schedule. We’ll move our Corvette race car display up the hill to be enjoyed by the thousands attending this great event. A great weekend of Vintage and Trans Am Series action.\n\nAccommodations \nWhile there are a variety of lodging options in Watkins Glen\, the more popular already are heavily booked. As an alternative option\, we have secured a limited block of rooms at the beautiful Hilton Garden Inn Corning Downtown\, only 25 minutes from WG. Rooms are being held\, beginning on Thursday\, Sept. 7 through Sunday night\, Sept. 10 at a rate of $229.00 / night plus tax. You may call the hotel directly at (607) 438-1400 and request the IMRRC September Group Block rate. Guests may book directly online on the hotel website: www.HGICORNING.HGI.com and use the code: IMRRCS to receive this special group rate. The room block will only be held until August 6 so do not delay in reserving your room. \nIn Closing \nAs a Corvette owner you have a special appreciation for the marque. As someone who has raced a Corvette\, you have that same appreciation for the history of racing at ‘The Glen’. Join us for this very special weekend when we tie together 75 years of racing with the 70th birthday of the car that has been such an integral part of it…and maybe make a little history of your own.

SUMMARY:Opening Day at Watkins Glen with NEQ and Audi Rochester
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what it’s like to drive on one of the most famous road courses in the world?\nWell you don’t have to wonder any more. Join us and drive the track with fellow Audi enthusiasts under controlled conditions behind a pace car.  If you are an NEQ track veteran you already know what it’s like to drive the Glen at speed. But what’s it like at street speeds with your family in the car? \nEvery year Watkins Glen International (The Glen) holds an opening day fundraiser to kick off the racing season.  The price of admission is $28 which consists of a donation to the Watkins Glen R.A.C.E Foundation and a small administrative fee. The mission of R.A.C.E. (Racing And Community Enrichment) is to meet the needs of local underserved populations with a focus on youth-oriented support. \n\n\nThe day will begin at Audi Rochester on West Henrietta Road for breakfast courtesy of the dealership.  From there we will make our way to The Glen where we will line up and be escorted via pace car for 3 laps of this world-famous race course. \nWe have added lunch at one of the Finger Lakes oldest wineries this year! \nUpon completing the pace laps on the track we will rejoin as a group for a catered lunch at the Ginny Lee Café which is part of Wagner Winery. Wagner is located on Rt 414 on the East side of Seneca Lake north of Watkins Glen. \nEnjoy views of the beautiful finger lakes while you have lunch and\, perhaps\, sample Wagner’s libations.  After lunch you may continue along the Seneca and Cayuga Wine Trail to the many local wineries\, stop by the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls or return to The Glen for more paced laps on our own. Tickets for return laps may be purchased on line or at the gate.  Or relax spending time exploring the natural wonders or shops in the Watkins Glen area.\nCosts for this event are the charitable donation to the R.A.C.E Foundation\, lunch at the Ginny Lee Café is $24 for adults\, $10 for kids 12 and under. Future Audi owners under 2 years old are free.  Choose any or all of these activities. Audi Rochester is graciously providing breakfast at the dealership for all those who want to start out from there. \nA little bit about the day…\n8:00 AM  – Meet up at Audi Rochester for a little socializing and a breakfast courtesy of Audi Rochester. (If you are coming from outside the Rochester area or the time is too early on a Saturday\, you are welcome to skip the dealership and meet us at the track at 10:30 AM)\n9:00 – leave for the track\, making your own way.  It’s about a 1:40 drive via the NYS Thruway and Rt 14 through Geneva.\n10:45  Arrive at the track via Gate 3 to sign in and drive the track.\n12:15 – 2:00  Lunch at the Ginny Lee Café at Wagner Winery\, 9322 Rt 414\, Lodi  (30 min from the race track and 20 min from the Village of Watkins Glen)\n2:00 Enjoy the rest of the day in the Finger Lakes. \nSee You At The Glen!

SUMMARY:High Performance Driving School: Watkins Glen Season Opener
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of a driving school is quite simple: to improve your driving skills. We conduct the school on a racetrack under the close supervision of experienced and trained instructors. You will learn how to handle and control your vehicle at speeds not normally attained on public roads. This will help to prepare you for emergencies in normal driving. It will also allow you to explore your capabilities as a driver and those of your vehicle in a controlled environment. At no time will you be encouraged to go any faster than is comfortable. All participants will be organized into run groups in accordance with experience\, skill\, and type of vehicle. \nWhat you learn on the track depends on your driving skill. Beginners are taught driving style (smoothness\, consistency\, the ability to read the track)\, more experienced participants continue to work on consistency\, while developing new skills such as trail braking and threshold braking. \nAs a beginner\, every time you are on the track\, you will have an experienced instructor with you in the passenger seat.\nThough you are on a racetrack with other drivers of similar driving skills\, it is not a race. Passing in corners is not allowed\, and you are not expected to shift at redline\, or go screaming through each corner with the tires squealing. Safety of the event is of the utmost importance. Driver conduct will be diligently monitored throughout the day by the staff\, instructors\, and corner workers. \nTrack Time: You will have four on-track sessions each day varying from 20-30 minutes each. At the end of the event you will have had between 1.5 to 2 hours on-track each day. That’s a lot of driving time and a lot of personalized high-quality instruction.\n\nDo I need to own an Audi?  We welcome all makes of cars  — you don’t have to drive an Audi to enjoy our events.  This school is an excellent way for you to improve your driving skills and have fun too! \nFirst Time Students:  Our club is a friendly community of individuals who share a passion for driving their cars. We know what it’s like to drive on a race-track for the first time and we customize your experience to make it an enjoyable as possible. We love welcoming first-timers to our events and we have a good number of first-timers at each one – you will not be alone.  Your novice classroom teacher and your personal instructor are ready to make you comfortable and give you the tools and confidence to enjoy driving your car on the race-track.

SUMMARY:Center Conversation: "The Greatest Corvette Story Ever Told"
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a very special presentation about the amazing history of Camoradi USA Racing’s 1960 Corvette and the colorful cast of characters surrounding it. The car was built for international competition under the auspices of Chevrolet General Manager Ed Cole and Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Duntov and went on to race successfully in Havana\, Daytona\, Sebring\, Nürburgring\, Sweden\, and Le Mans. The only thing more amazing than this car’s creation and race record is its survival. On the way to Britain’s famed Goodwood circuit in August 1960 it was crashed hard and left for dead but miraculously\, the shattered remains were preserved and discovered some thirty years later by Loren Lundberg\, an unbelievably tenacious Corvette enthusiast from Glendale\, Arizona. Learn how Loren found and rescued the car\, and how he and current caretaker Dominick Testa went to great lengths to restore it and make sure its incredible story would not be forgotten. \nChuck Schroedel: Chuck was part of the Camoradi Corvette’s crew at Le Mans in 1960\nDominick Testa: Dominick is the Camoradi Corvette’s current caretaker\nRichard Prince: Richard is a Corvette historian
