Slot Car Racing Champion to Speak During Model Car Show March 17-19
Frank Spena, a professional slot car racing champion, will speak during the 4th Annual Model Car Show at the International Motor Racing Research Center Friday through Sunday, March 17-19.
Thousands of cars will be displayed at the annual show at the Center. Admission is free. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
He will speak on Saturday, March 18, at 1 p.m. A $5 donation for admission is requested to help defray costs.
The weekend event is sponsored in part by the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce. The show and talk are presented in the IMRRC’s Center Conversations monthly speaker series.
Spena, now a hobbyist racer, was a co-founder of the Slot Car Club of the Twin Tiers, which will set up a slot car track that Model Car Show attendees will be welcome to operate.
Spena is a seven-time Snowball 500 champion, winning the first six competitions. He also won championships in the 2001 USHOC T-Jet World; the 2002 New Jersey Shootout; the 2002, 2004 and 2006 UFHORA T-Jet Nationals; the 2004 East Coast T-Jet; and the 2007 SRO Can-Am, with teammate Dave Hendrickson.
BRP developed a Ford GT Spena edition, and Riggen sold a special edition collector car named after him.
